A drone strike on Nizhnekamsk (Republic of Tatarstan) was carried out on August 10, 2026. The event affected Volga Region: Governor Gleb Nikitin sent an official telegram of condolences to the head of Tatarstan on the same day.
Course of Events and Casualties
On August 10, 2026, Nizhnekamsk was subjected to a massive drone attack. Thirteen people were killed, including a girl; 75 victims sought medical assistance, of whom 21 were hospitalized. The attack began on the night of August 10: at 2:51 a drone-threat alert was declared in Tatarstan, and at 5:18 a drone attack threat was announced for the Zakamsky part of the republic — in Nizhnekamsk, Naberezhnye Chelny, and Yelabuga; the alert in Nizhnekamsk was lifted nearly four hours later.[1][2]
One of the primary targets struck was a hostel in the city's industrial zone: nine of the thirteen victims died there. Of the nine killed in the hostel, seven were citizens of Uzbekistan and one was a citizen of Tajikistan, the General Consulate of Uzbekistan in Kazan reported; Rustam Minnikhanov clarified that the hostel was not located in the industrial zone and that the workers residing there were not employed at industrial facilities.[1][2] The press service of the head of Tatarstan reported that investigative measures were being carried out at the scene.[2] The head of the republic, Rustam Minnikhanov, personally traveled to Nizhnekamsk and inspected the damaged industrial zone. Tatarstan's Minister of Health Almir Abashev reported that the victims had sustained primarily penetrating wounds from fragmentation elements; two were in serious condition, and additional medical teams were dispatched to Nizhnekamsk from Naberezhnye Chelny.[1] Another victim was a girl who was sleeping on an apartment balcony at the time of the strike: a drone crashed into a tree and exploded, debris damaged the building, and the child died before the ambulance arrived.[1][2]
Aftermath and Mourning
Tatarstan declared a period of mourning; all entertainment and sporting events in the republic were cancelled. The Cabinet of Ministers of Tatarstan approved lump-sum assistance payments: 2 million rubles to the families of those killed, 600,000 rubles for serious or moderate injury, and 300,000 rubles for minor injury; compensation for lost property ranged from 78,000 to 156,000 rubles. A spontaneous memorial appeared outside the Nizhnekamsk Museum on the same day, with residents bringing flowers in memory of the victims.[1][1] Among the cancelled events were the celebrations marking Nizhnekamsk's 60th anniversary, which had been scheduled for August 15, 2026.[2]
Response of Nizhny Novgorod Region
On August 10, 2026, Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin sent a telegram of condolences to Rustam Minnikhanov. The message expressed the grief of Nizhny Novgorod residents alongside the people of Tatarstan, their shared pain of loss, and support for those affected: "On behalf of all Nizhny Novgorod residents and on my own behalf, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those killed and my sincere support to all those who suffered in these tragic circumstances."[3]
