Tram Depot No. 2 (Gordeevskoye) is a facility for the maintenance and storage of tram cars, located on Narodnaya Street in the Gordeevka neighborhood (Kanavinsky District of Nizhny Novgorod). By land area, it is considered the largest tram depot in Russia: the site covers 9.47 hectares and is designed to accommodate and service up to 150 vehicles simultaneously.[1][3] From 2026, the depot is undergoing a major reconstruction as part of a comprehensive tram network modernization program for Nizhny Novgorod.

Reconstruction

In August 2026, VEB.RF transferred 1.32 billion rubles from the National Wealth Fund (NWF) to pay an advance to the general contractor for the depot's reconstruction.[2][3] The project calls for the renovation of production buildings and engineering infrastructure, as well as the creation of modern conditions for tram car maintenance.[4] VEB.RF Executive Director Valery Snezhko described the depot as "the largest tram depot by area in Russia" and emphasized that its reconstruction will ensure reliable operation of the updated rolling stock for many years to come.[1]

The depot reconstruction is part of a city-wide tram network modernization program approved by the Russian government. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko serves as the program's government supervisor, while VEB.RF acts as the financing organization, project office, and coordinator.[2] The total approved funding for Nizhny Novgorod amounts to 32.1 billion rubles, including NWF resources.[1]

Tram Network Modernization Program

Nizhny Novgorod became the first non-capital region to join the federal project for modernizing tram infrastructure.[5] As of August 2026, with VEB.RF support, 166 MiNiN trams have been delivered to the city and 117.5 km of track has been reconstructed; on modernized sections, passenger traffic has grown by 30% and travel speeds by more than 60%.[1][2] The full program provides for the delivery of 170 new trams, the replacement of 149.3 km of single track, and the reconstruction of 15 traction substations. Delivery of all rolling stock is planned for 2026, with all construction work to be completed by the end of 2027.[3][4]
