Seraya Loshad — the unofficial name (nickname) of a building on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street near Gorky Square, and the surrounding area (bus stop), which houses two faculties of UNN: the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Finance. In appearance, the building resembles a Stalinist-era residential block.
Background
In Soviet times, this was the student slang name for the "Vecherniy" restaurant located in this building. During the day it operated as a canteen, and in the evening as a restaurant — a comparatively inexpensive one, which made it popular among students and other people of modest means.
Today, students frequent the neighboring café "Voyage", one of the first cafés to open during The so-called "perestroika".
The lively sixties saw cinema flooded with cowboy films. "The Magnificent Seven" was one of the most beloved films among young audiences. It is little wonder, then, that students nicknamed their canteen "Seraya Loshad" ("The Grey Horse") — that being the name of the saloon in that film.
