The Estate of Merchant M. N. Smirnov is a monument of urban planning and architecture dating from the late 19th century, located in Nizhny Novgorod at Ilyinskaya Street, buildings 20 and 20A. The complex comprises the main residential house with the owner's office, a small block of stone cellars, and a wing with a warehouse.[1]
Architecture
Building No. 20 on Ilyinskaya Street was constructed in the so-called brick style of the late 19th century. A defining feature of this architectural direction is that the texture of the brick is left exposed rather than concealed beneath plaster: all decorative elements of the facade are fashioned from brick. The building is distinguished by its concise and austere architecture.[1]
History
According to documents from 1900, M. N. Smirnov was recorded as the owner of the estate. In the early 20th century, the main house was merged with the small block of stone cellars into a single volume. The wing served as a warehouse, a function it retained into the 1920s.[1]
Current Condition
Building No. 20 on Ilyinskaya Street is now occupied by the Nizhny Novgorod Medical Basic College.[1]
