Shirokaya Street — serves as the outlet of Zelensky Descent to the bank of the Volga. In ancient times, the valley of the Pochaina river ran along its course, which is why the specialized rows of the Lower Posad market (from the 18th century onward — the wings of the stone trading arcade) were situated on elevated riverbank terraces at some distance from one another. During the sweeping urban redevelopment of Nizhny Novgorod in the 1830s–1840s, the Pochaina River was enclosed in a stone pipe-collector and gradually filled in with earth. Yet the old gap between the city blocks was preserved. On account of its exceptional width compared with the other narrow lanes laid out in the area, this street received the name Shirokaya ("Wide") when the plan of Nizhny Novgorod was confirmed in 1839.
