The Sarov Physics and Technology Institute (SarFTI) is a branch of the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI" (NRNU MEPhI), located in Sarov), Nizhny Novgorod Region.[1] The institution trains specialists in physics, engineering, and related disciplines, and is closely associated with the Russian Federal Nuclear Center — All-Russian Research Institute of Experimental Physics, which is also located in Sarov.

Structure and Activities

The institute includes a humanities faculty with a department of humanities. The institute's pre-university preparation faculty conducts practice testing for students in grades 9–11 in the format of the Unified State Exam (EGE) and the Basic State Exam (OGE), using tasks developed by the Federal Institute of Pedagogical Measurements.[4] The institute comprises a physics and technology faculty, a faculty of information technology and electronics, a faculty of economics and mathematics, a faculty of pre-university preparation, a faculty of professional development, as well as a postgraduate program and a polytechnic college.[3] Since 2001, the dean of this faculty and head of the department has been Anatoly Petrovich Skripnik, Doctor of Philosophy.[1] The institute offers programs in technical and natural science disciplines: in particular, from 1998 to 2002, Gennadiy Ivanovich Shishkin — a specialist in electronic devices, employee of VNIIEF and VNIITF, and author of more than 310 published scientific works — taught the lecture course "Radiation Hardness of Radio-Electronic Equipment" here as a professor.[1]

Connection with VNIIEF and the Scientific Community

SarFTI is closely integrated into the scientific environment of the closed city. The position of Vice-Rector for Research and Non-Budgetary Activities has been held since 2000 by Valeriy Vasilevich Zorya, who previously worked within VNIIEF structures: from 1992 to 1997 as head of a business center, and from 1997 to 2000 as laboratory director and bureau chief.[1] The institute hosts the Sarov Branch of the Russian Association of Medical Physicists, of which Zorya V. V. serves as president. The institute's academic and laboratory facilities include laboratories for strong magnetic fields and solid-state physics, unsteady hydrodynamic flows, physics of superintense light fields, nanostructured systems, and non-destructive testing, as well as an access center for the supercomputers of the RFNC-VNIIEF. Students of SarFTI have won prizes at the Spartakiad of Workers in Nuclear Energy, industry, and science "Atomiade," and the institute itself was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the International Olympiad "IT-Planeta."[3][1]

For the 2023–2024 academic year, SarFTI had 130 state-funded places in IT programs, joining the list of Nizhny Novgorod higher education institutions offering information technology training.[2]
