The name comes from the Krasnaya Etna metalworking plant, now known simply as "Etna."
A Note on the Name
Speaking of Etna: Etna is the largest volcano in Europe. When the volcano quiets down, blues music festivals are held on its slopes. Sicilians call Etna "the kind volcano" and settle densely on its flanks, even though lava flows periodically wipe out one settlement or another. Recently, the UN named Etna the Volcano of the Decade. The question is: what were the people thinking when they named the plant and its surrounding neighborhood "Etna"? This neighborhood is decidedly not kind, blues festivals will never be held here, and the UN will never name Krasnaya Etna the Place of the Decade.
