Pochainskaya Street, climbing the slope of the ravine of the same name from the Lower Posad market to the Church of the Myrrh-Bearing Women, is one of the oldest streets in Nizhny Novgorod. It has been known by this name since the early 17th century. Its straight building lines were set out as early as the 1770 plan of Nizhny Novgorod, and were subsequently revised several times in the plans of 1799, 1804, and 1824. They were finally fixed in 1839, when the pond situated below the Church of the Myrrh-Bearers on the slope was landscaped and the section of it that opened onto the street was filled in. After that, the street was rapidly built up with stone houses (though a 17th-century stone mansion survives, known as the House of Peter I). The buildings were set at different levels, creating a distinctive vista of architectural volumes and steeply pitched rooftops cascading down the hillside.
