Grigoryev Nikolay Dmitrievich (19 January 1840 — 1895) was an architect who worked in Nizhny Novgorod during the last two decades of the nineteenth century. He served as Nizhny Novgorod City Council Executive Board from 1880 to 1893, designing and constructing a number of significant buildings in the historic center of the city.[3]

Education and Early Career

Grigoryev studied at the Academy of Arts from 1860 to 1867, completing his academic coursework in 1864. After finishing his studies, he undertook private commissions in Saint Petersburg. In 1880 he was invited to Nizhny Novgorod to serve as architect of the city administration.[3]

Buildings and Projects in Nizhny Novgorod

One of his first major assignments was participation in the competition for the design of the real school buildings at Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, 37; Grigoryev refined the final version of the project and oversaw the construction of this complex between 1881 and 1885. Concurrently, from 1881 to 1883, he took part in developing the general plan for the expansion of Nizhny Novgorod, laying out new city districts into blocks, and conducting leveling earthworks in the area of Belinsky Street.[3]

To his own designs, Grigoryev erected in 1881 a three-story tenement house belonging to the merchant I. Mokeyev (Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, 20). In 1883 he rebuilt the eighteenth-century premises of the first city pharmacy (Varvarskaya Street) and renovated a wooden house on the same street (Varvarskaya, 8). In 1885 he restored the workshop of the Dobroye and Nabgolts plant (Rozhdestvenskaya) after a fire and fitted out the handicraft and industrial exhibition at the yarmarka.[3]

In 1888, several merchant mansions were built to Grigoryev's designs at once: the mansion of V. Rukavishnikov at Bolshaya Pecherskaya Street, and Bugrov at Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment.[3]

The architect's last known work was the building of Nizhegorodsky Listok at Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, 24. In 1894 Grigoryev resigned his post and applied for a certificate of service in Saint Petersburg, but died shortly afterward, in 1895.[3]

Awards and Burial

Grigoryev was awarded the Order of Saint Stanislaus, 3rd degree. He was buried at the Krestovozdvizhensky Cemetery in Nizhny Novgorod; the cemetery was subsequently closed and the grave has been lost.[3]
