Unveiled on 2 July 2008, opposite the regional headquarters of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate on Nizhny Novgorod's Cape Strelka: atop the pedestal stands a symbol of the 1970s — a GAZ-24 "Volga" patrol car.
The orange vehicle with a blue stripe along its side is visible to anyone passing over the Kanavinsky Bridge.
Criminals and bandits of years gone by have long remembered the look of this formidable machine. With an engine output of 90 horsepower, the car could accelerate to 100 km/h in 20 seconds.
In its day it was one of the finest cars in the USSR. The patrol "Volga" covered many kilometres of Nizhny Novgorod's roads. In it, officers of the GAI carried out countless detentions of criminals and traffic-law violators.
