Makaryev Monastery (Makaryev Monastery) is located on the left bank of the Volga River, 90 km from Nizhny Novgorod, and is currently active.
According to tradition, the monastery was founded in 1435 by the holy monk Makary, a native of Nizhny Novgorod, but was already destroyed by the Tatars in 1439. It was not restored until the 1620s, and almost immediately the large and significant Makaryev Fair was established beneath its walls, before being relocated to the vicinity of Nizhny Novgorod in 1817.
Feature of the Site
The monastery ensemble, which took shape in the 17th century, remains magnificent to this day.
The dominant structure is the majestic Trinity Cathedral, built in 1658, which retains its frescoes from the late 17th century. The Assumption Church (1651), with its tent-roofed bell tower, and the Makaryev Church (1808), built in the classical style, form organic parts of the ensemble. The white-stone walls and towers (1662–1667), which represent a vivid example of ancient Russian defensive architecture, lend the ensemble a sense of completeness.
