Georgievsky Descent — a historic roadway on the Volga slope in Nizhegorodsky District, laid in 1834–1839 simultaneously with the Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment and Alexandrovsky Garden as part of the large-scale urban transformation of Nizhny Novgorod carried out by decree of Emperor Nicholas I.

History
The descent was cut into the slope of the Volga bank between 1834 and 1839, together with the Kazansky (formerly Pechersky) Descent — to provide a way down to the Volga from the newly laid Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment. In August 2026, repairs were completed on a road section of more than 800 metres along Georgievsky Descent — from Minin Square to the Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment: curb stones were installed, manhole covers were replaced, the worn road surface was renewed, and new road markings were applied. After the repairs were finished, traffic on the descent was opened without restrictions; however, the facility was not formally accepted from the contractor, as a number of deficiencies requiring correction had been identified. The repairs were carried out by Eidos LLC; the contract sum with the contractor was approximately 24.5 million rubles.[2][1] At the same time, ravines cutting through the bank were filled in, slopes were levelled and turfed, and Alexandrovsky Garden was laid out. Before the embankment and descents were built, the Volga slopes were occupied by kitchen gardens, bathhouses, outbuildings, and the modest dwellings of Nizhny Novgorod's poor, as well as the ancient Panskaya Sloboda.
In City Life
In pre-reform times, Georgievsky Descent, like the neighbouring Pochainsky and Pokhvalinskiy Descents, served as one of the routes to the water: residents who had no means of their own would walk down it to the Volga springs to fetch drinking water.
