Galanin Timofey Grigoryevich (February 3, 1927, village of Smolniki, Balakhninsky District — September 6, 2003, Nizhny Novgorod) — boring-lathe operator at the Krasnoye Sormovo Plant named after A. A. Zhdanov, Hero of Socialist Labor (1975).[2][4] Having worked at the enterprise continuously for nearly half a century, he became one of the outstanding front-runners of the shipbuilding industry of Gorky Region.[3]

Biography and Career

He was born into a peasant family in the village of Smolniki, now part of the Balakhninsky Municipal District of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.[2] He lost both parents at the age of five.[4] In 1939 he completed four grades at a rural school in Nikitino.[4] With the outbreak of the The Great Patriotic War, he took part in digging defensive lines between the Volga and the Oka River.[2]

In February 1944 he joined the Krasnoye Sormovo Plant named after A. A. Zhdanov, under the USSR Ministry of Shipbuilding Industry, as a boring-lathe operator, and worked there continuously for half a century — until 1993.[4] In 1966 he completed his studies at Evening School No. 32 and enrolled in a three-year foremen's training course.[2] He took an active part in the public life of the enterprise and was elected deputy of the Gorky Regional Soviet of People's Deputies.[2] From 1993 he was on a well-earned retirement and resided in Nizhny Novgorod.[4]

Awards

For the successful fulfillment of the targets of the 8th Five-Year Plan (1966–1970), he was awarded the Order of Lenin by a decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet dated April 6, 1970.[4] By a decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet dated May 15, 1975, for the ahead-of-schedule fulfillment of the 9th Five-Year Plan (1971–1974), he was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor, along with the Order of Lenin (No. 422666) and the gold medal "Hammer and Sickle" (No. 16737).[4] In total, he was awarded two Orders of Lenin and a number of medals.[2]

Legacy

Materials about Galanin are held in the museum of the Krasnoye Sormovo Plant; it was the museum that provided information about him for the book "Heroes of Labor — Nizhny Novgorod residents" (Nizhny Novgorod, 2001).[4] He was buried at the Nizhny Novgorod Koposovo, where a memorial headstone has been erected.[4][2]
