The selo of Gagino is the administrative center of Gaginsky District of the Nizhny Novgorod Region; it is located on the left bank of the Pyana River, 50 kilometers from the railway station in the city of Town of Sergach on the City of Arzamas–Kazan line, and 45 kilometers from the station in the city of Lukoyanov on the City of Arzamas–Krasny Uzel line.
History of founding
The territory of the present-day selo was granted by Ivan the Terrible to the military governor Prince Ivan Vasilyevich Gagin following the campaign against Kazan in 1552. The exact date of the selo's founding is unknown; some sources give 1586, others 1588.
Until 1929, Gagino was part of Sergachsky Uyezd of the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate. On June 10, 1929, the Gagino volost was renamed Gaginsky District by decision of the uyezd Council, with the selo of Gagino as its administrative center. The territory of the new district comprised 116 inhabited localities with a total population of 86,000 people.
Education
The district has 28 schools, 6 preschool institutions, 2 supplementary education establishments — the House of Children's Creative Arts and the Nadezhda Youth Club — an Agricultural Technical College, and two branch campuses of higher educational institutions: the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Management and Business and the Moscow University of the Humanities.
