«GAZ Group» is a Russian automotive holding company founded in 2005 as a result of the restructuring of the production assets of JSC Ruspromavto, which had existed since 2001.[1] The holding brought together JSC GAZ, 18 automotive enterprises across 10 regions of Russia, as well as sales and service networks; the company's headquarters is located in Nizhny Novgorod.[1] The principal shareholder of JSC GAZ is the machine-building holding Russkie Mashiny.[1] The Gorky Automobile Plant, which forms the production core of the holding, is the city-forming enterprise of Nizhny Novgorod: the plant's share in the city's machine-building industry stood at 75.3%, and in the Region's at 48.4%; the enterprise is the Region's largest taxpayer.[1]
Structure and Operations
The holding's activities are structured across six lines of business, each overseen by a separate division that brings together the relevant production enterprises and sales organizations.[1] The production base is concentrated in Nizhny Novgorod and the Nizhny Novgorod Region, where the key enterprises historically associated with the Gorky Automobile Plant are located.[1] The plant employs more than 70,000 people.[1]
JSC GAZ holds a certificate of conformity for its quality system to the national and international ISO-9002 standards.[1] The sales network is oriented toward meeting consumer demand throughout Russia; the export of vehicles and vehicle assembly kits to countries in the near and far abroad is being actively developed.[1]
International Cooperation and Production
JSC GAZ has carried out a number of joint projects with foreign partners: with INGERSOLL-RAND — the production of high-quality tools; with BOSCH — the production of automotive electrical equipment; with LEAR — the production of seats; with CZ — the production of turbochargers for diesel engines; with TUCKER — the introduction of drawn arc stud welding technology; with HADEN — the creation of painting systems.[1] The technical capabilities of the HADEN-2 complex allow vehicle bodies to be painted in up to 12 colors, including two-coat metallic enamels.[1]
Work was simultaneously conducted on establishing a joint venture with IVECO for the production of light commercial vehicles of the GAZelle and Sobol type, medium-duty trucks and diesel engines for them, as well as a joint production arrangement with ZF for the manufacture of gearboxes for passenger cars and trucks.[1] From January 2003, production began of upgraded Gazelle and Sobol light trucks.[1] As part of the improvement of the passenger car model range, preparations were underway for production of the upgraded GAZ-3110 «Volga», and a new class-D model was developed — the GAZ-3115 Volga.[1]
Leadership
The holding is headed by Vadim Sorokin (born 13 June 1956), who assumed the position of President of GAZ Group in 2008.[1] For his contribution to the development of the automotive industry and the Region's industry, he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, and in 2026 — the title of Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod.[1]
