Historically, this refers to any settlement enclosed by a rampart or palisade for defensive purposes.

The title reflects the traditional view that the "real," "old" Gorod is located in Dyatlov Hills at the mouth Oka River in contrast to its new outskirts, which no one had thought to fortify over the centuries and which, throughout most of Nizhny Novgorod’s history, had the status of industrial settlements or Village within Nizhny Novgorod.
