Bakusheva Nina Pavlovna (June 13, 1931, Nizhny Novgorod — August 10, 2001, Nizhny Novgorod) — mathematics teacher at School No. 82 of Sormovo District in Gorky, Hero of Socialist Labor (1978). A native of the city, she began her education at the very school where she would go on to work for several decades.[1]

Biography and Teaching Career

Nina Bakusheva was born into a family of educators. In 1939 she enrolled in the first grade of School No. 82 and graduated with a gold medal in 1949. In 1953 she graduated with distinction from the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Pedagogical University, after which she taught for two years at a rural school in Vladimir Oblast. In 1955, as one of the best young teachers, she was sent for three years to the German Democratic Republic. Upon her return, she came back to her home School No. 82 — Bakusheva returned to School No. 82 in 1959, after working at Evening School for Working Youth No. 14 in Sormovo and teaching at a school attached to the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany.[2] She taught mathematics there until 1991.[1]

In 1970 the school was granted the status of an institution with advanced study of mathematics and physics. Bakusheva's original teaching methods, developed together with her colleagues, were exhibited at the VDNKh; the journal Narodnoye Obrazovaniye (Public Education) regularly published articles about the innovative teaching systems at School No. 82, calling it "a training ground for the Sormovo intelligentsia." The hallmarks of her pedagogy were a rigorously academic approach to presenting material, thoroughly planned lessons, comprehensive use of visual and technical teaching aids, and the ability to foster a focused and calm atmosphere in the classroom.[1]

Public Activities

Alongside her teaching, Bakusheva was actively engaged in public life: she was elected a deputy of the Gorky Regional Soviet of Deputies, a member of the CPSU Regional Committee, and served as a delegate to the 26th Party Congress.[1]

Recognition and Awards

In 1971 Bakusheva was awarded the title "Excellent Worker in Public Education," and in 1975 the title "Honored Teacher of the RSFSR." By decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet dated June 27, 1978, for outstanding services in the education and upbringing of students, she was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor, along with the Order of Lenin and the gold medal "Hammer and Sickle." In addition to the Order of Lenin, Bakusheva was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.[2][1]

Later Years and Legacy

From 1991 until her retirement in 1998, Bakusheva worked as a methodologist at School No. 82, supporting young teachers. She died on August 10, 2001, and was buried at the Novo-Sormovo Cemetery in Nizhny Novgorod. School No. 82, with which her entire life was connected, now operates as MAOU Lyceum No. 82 of Sormovo District in Nizhny Novgorod.[1]

In memory of Nina Pavlovna Bakusheva, a memorial plaque has been installed on the building of School No. 82 (Sormovo District, Kultury Street, 1).[2]

Her mother, Aleksandra Rodionovna Bakusheva, was awarded the Order of Lenin, and her father worked as an engineer.[3]
