- Alexander Vasilyevich Stupin — painter and teacher (1776–1861) who founded, in the early 19th century in Arzamas, Stupin's Arzamas School of Painting outside Saint Petersburg and Moscow. The school played a significant role in the artistic education of the Nizhny Novgorod region and trained a number of painters who later gained recognition beyond it; in particular, Vasily Grigoryevich Perov studied there in 1846–1849. For the 250th anniversary of Stupin's birth, an exhibition "Arzamas Academy. For the 250th Anniversary of the Birth of A. V. Stupin" opened at the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum ("NGKhM | Russian Art").
