"Robinson" — a restaurant complex on the Grebnoy Canal Embankment in Nizhny Novgorod, opened in 2004 and demolished in August 2026. For two decades it was one of the popular leisure destinations for Nizhny Novgorod residents, owing to its extensive grounds and garden; in the five or six years before its demolition it had ceased to operate.[1]
History and Regulatory Complaints
The complex opened in 2004. Almost immediately after opening, the regulatory authorities raised objections against the owners: Rosprirodnadzor (the Federal Environmental Supervision Agency) sought to have the City Hall order allocating land on the embankment declared invalid, citing the absence of a positive conclusion from the state environmental review.[1] Despite the disputes, the complex operated and was popular among city residents. At some point the establishment ceased trading, and for the five or six years before its demolition the building stood vacant.[1]
Change of Ownership and Demolition
According to the Unified Federal Register of Bankruptcy Information, the restaurant complex was acquired by the Nizhny Novgorod limited liability company "K2" for 62.5 million rubles approximately one year before the demolition.[1] The new owner proceeded to develop the H2O hotel complex on the Rowing, planned in three construction phases. By the time "Robinson" was demolished, the first phase — a small two-storey hotel in a futuristic architectural style — had already been built.[1]
In August 2026 the two-storey restaurant building was demolished. Construction debris was removed from the fenced-off site; in place of the former structure, level sand remains.[1]
