Interesting Facts

  • A substantial portion of the income earned by the photographic studios well known in Nizhny Novgorod — including the celebrated salon of Maxim Petrovich Dmitriev — came from the business of producing promotional cards for actresses at the yarmarka fairground booths and for staff at the brothels.
  • The Nizhny Novgorod police photo registry, which by some accounts contained more than 9,000 individuals, was discarded from the Gorky Regional Archive in the 1960s but was saved by the head of the archive's photography department. As of the early 2000s, it was held in his private collection.
