nis.nnov.su is the domain of the closed joint-stock company "Nizhny Novgorod Information Networks" (NIS), an internet service provider and network integrator that operated on the Nizhny Novgorod market since 1991[1][3]. The company operated its own fiber-optic network more than 200 km long based on ATM technology and offered a full range of internet services — from leased lines to dial-up access[1]. In our data, the domain is recorded from 1999 to 2021, with the last address being a move to nnov.starttelecom.ru[2].
What the site looked like and what it offered
An early version of the site (a snapshot from August 2000) was organized as a typical provider portal of the turn of the century: sections "Home", "News", "Company", "Services", "Projects", "Technologies", "Web Guide", "FAQ", "Forum", "Reviews", "Search", "Site Map"[1]. The company's office — the Network Technologies Center of CJSC "NIS" — was listed at 2 Kostina St., office 11, telephone (8312) 301-905, email info@nis.nnov.su[1]. Besides the company's own news, the home page carried digests from Nizhny Novgorod news feeds — "Infonet", the Nizhny Novgorod Telegraph Agency, and the Nizhny Novgorod News Service[1], and among the featured topics were an article on "xDSL — high-speed technologies" and an overview of the callback service[1].
By 2006 the site had changed its look and its sales office address: 20 Korolenko St., telephones (8312) 30-90-88 and 30-99-84, email info@nis-nn.ru[3]. The menu had shrunk to "Home", "Company", "Services", "Web Guide", "Ask a Question", "For Clients", and the page now featured a webcam and a login for registered users[3]. As the home page reported, the company sold internet cards with access phone numbers 902-902, 39-99-99 and 19-99-29, with callback enabled by default for number 902-902[3]; corporate clients were offered a new mail server based on CommuniGate Pro[3], and the cards were sold, among other outlets, through the "Tsifrograd" mobile electronics center chain[3]. The copyright notice at the bottom of the page listed the range 1991–2004[3].
Place in the Nizhny Novgorod internet
The site was listed in the providers section of the nn.ru catalog (/rub/)[1]. Our data records no votes for it in the Nizhny Novgorod Internet Day, and it does not appear in the surviving samples of Counter.nn.ru — the methodology is described in more detail in the Archival study of the Nizhny Novgorod internet from the counter.nn.ru rating. This does not indicate low traffic — only that the site did not fall within the measurements of the Nizhny Novgorod Internet of that era available to us.
How it closed
The last recorded snapshot is dated March 5, 2021: by that point the page no longer contained the site's content — only the technical text "You're connected to Internet, please refresh your page" remained[2]. According to available data, earlier, in 2009, the web archive recorded a redirect from nis.nnov.su to the domain nnov.starttelecom.ru[2] — apparently, the NIS business was absorbed or reregistered under that address. The company's own site under the domain nis.nnov.su had effectively ceased to exist by 2021.
