Muhammad-Amin was a khan of the Kazan Khanate who ruled in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. In the history of Nizhny Novgorod, he is known primarily as the organizer of the siege of Nizhny Novgorod in 1505, which was one episode in the long-running conflict between the Kazan Khanate and the Muscovite state.
The Siege of Nizhny Novgorod of 1505
In 1505, Muhammad-Amin assembled a combined force of Tatars and Nogais and advanced on Nizhny Novgorod. The khan's allies included Nogai mirzas, one of whom was his brother-in-law. The siege left a notable mark on the Urban Legends associated with the The Kremlin.
According to legend, the decisive role in lifting the siege was played by a shot fired by a captive Lithuanian gunner from the Ivanovo Tower of the Kremlin: he struck the Nogai mirza — commander of the allied forces and the khan's brother-in-law. The mirza's death, as the legend has it, caused the army to retreat.
The event is regarded by historians as one episode in the conflict between the Muscovite state and the Kazan Khanate in the early 16th century.
