Meschera Lake in the Kanavinsky District of Nizhny Novgorod is the largest lake in the city. The lake is a Natural monument of regional significance.
In terms of its origin, the lake was once a channel and later an oxbow of the Volga River River. At one time the lake was connected to the Volga by a small channel.
The channel and the eastern part of the lake have silted up with sand, and the water body, having changed considerably, became landlocked. The lake has no tributaries; it is fed by rainfall, snowmelt, and groundwater. The lake gives its name to the Nizhny Novgorod district of Meschera. Meschera, in turn, is the name of an ancient Finno-Ugric tribe.
