Since 2003, all Sunday Islamic schools operating under the Makhinur Madrasa" have been designated as maktab (Arabic: "place of meeting").
In the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate, such institutions were traditionally known by the Tatar word mektebe.
This name was in use in pre-revolutionary Russia and was applied to all primary Islamic schools.
