The Makarovsky Trade-and-Storage Block is an architectural monument from the mid-19th century, located at Ilyinskaya Street, building 1 (sections A and B) in Upper Part. The building was constructed in 1857 to a design by architect N. A. Frelikh and is associated with the name of merchant N. Ye. Makarovsky. It is listed in the Unified State Register of Cultural Heritage Sites (monuments of history and culture) of the peoples of the Russian Federation under the category of regional protection.[1]
Architecture and Purpose
The block was intended for trade and the storage of goods. This type of building, combining retail and warehouse functions under one roof, was characteristic of Nizhny Novgorod merchant construction in the second half of the 19th century. The project was designed by architect N. A. Frelikh.[1]
Protected Status
The building has been placed under state protection as a regional-significance monument; the state protection order document is No. 33. As of 1 January 2005, the site is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of the peoples of the Russian Federation.[1]
The complex was erected on the site of a three-storey brick house that had been badly damaged by fire and stood at the foot of Ilyinskaya Hill.[2]
The buildings are constructed in the brick style — a rationalist strand of 19th-century eclecticism distinguished by the replacement of moulded ornament and plasterwork with decoration made from exposed brick.[2]
An important urban-planning feature of the block is that its structures, following the contour of the slope, vary in level and in the number of storeys (two and three), and their façades face three major thoroughfares: Ilyinskaya Street, Rozhdestvenskaya Street, and Zelensky Descent.[2]
The building façades are unplastered but painted in light tones; the white colour draws attention to the details — window surrounds, cornices, and pilasters.[2]
