legprom.nnov.ru — "Light Industry of Nizhny Novgorod," a sector hub for Nizhny Novgorod's textile and garment enterprises that operated in the early 2000s. The nn.ru directory described it in a single line: "An internet community of light-industry enterprises of Nizhny Novgorod"[2]. The address belonged to the Nizhny Novgorod nnov.ru zone, and the site itself was listed in the nn.ru directory under two categories at once — "Firms (Enterprises): Industry: Light Industry"[2] and "Projects: Production, Goods"[4]. The first Wayback Machine snapshot of the address is dated December 3, 2001[1].

A showcase of six enterprises

The site's structure can be reconstructed from links in the nn.ru directory: legprom.nnov.ru was not a single corporate page but a shared address under which each enterprise got its own subdirectory. The directory listed six such sections, each with its own product description[2].

At legprom.nnov.ru/nts/ was OAO "Nizhegorodsky Tekstil" (Nizhny Novgorod Textile) — upholstery fabrics, tapestry, chenille, rep, mattress ticking, tapestry bedspreads and tablecloths, elastic braid, upholstery fabric for car interiors. The section legprom.nnov.ru/luch/ was occupied by the Nizhny Novgorod garment company ZAO "LUCH NN" with suits, robes, uniforms, and bed linen; legprom.nnov.ru/ton — OAO "Ton," underwear knitwear and hosiery; legprom.nnov.ru/shvtkl/ — OOO "Sewing and Rigging Factory" (Shveyno-takelazhnaya fabrika), which produced tents, tarpaulin, storm jackets, raincoats, gloves, mittens, and backpacks[2].

The section legprom.nnov.ru/nitex/ belonged to ZAO "Niteks-spetsodezhda" (Nitex Workwear); the nn.ru directory listed it not only under light industry but also under "Firms (Enterprises): Medicine: Medical Equipment and Medical Goods" — because of its workwear and bedding items[7]. One subdirectory stood apart from the rest: legprom.nnov.ru/argo/, where OOO "Argo" installed gas-cylinder equipment on vehicles and was accordingly listed under automotive categories of the directory — "Trade in Auto Parts, Components, Accessories" and "Vehicle Maintenance and Auto Service"[6].

A place in the Nizhny Novgorod internet

Next to each link the nn.ru directory showed a Counter.nn.ru rating value, and these figures show how the hub gained weight over time. In the "Production, Goods" category, on April 25, 2002, it stood at 5.59[4], and by July 8, 2003, already at 23[5]. In the dedicated "Light Industry" category, on September 8, 2002, the site had 16 against 21 for its own subsection — OAO "Nizhegorodsky Tekstil"[2], and by July 30, 2003, the ratio had reversed: 16 for the shared page and 13 for the textile plant[3]. The site did not, however, gain public recognition: legprom.nnov.ru does not appear in the surviving results table of the Nizhny Novgorod Internet Day vote for 2004[8]. This is a common situation for the business segment of the Nizhny Novgorod Internet: voters favored entertainment and city-life projects, while sector directories remained known only to a narrow circle of buyers.

An empty Apache page at the start, someone else's site at the end

The earliest snapshot of the address in the Wayback Machine, from December 3, 2001, caught the moment before any content existed: legprom.nnov.ru served the standard Russian Apache stub — a web-server installation test page inviting the administrator to replace it with their own content[1]. The site itself, judging by directory entries, filled out over the course of 2002, and the last traces of its operation in our data date to summer 2003[3][5].

The next surviving snapshot of the home page, from June 22, 2008, shows a completely different project at the same address — the site of the company "Mebel Plyus Ofis" (Furniture Plus Office). As the home page stated, the company was part of the Nizhny Novgorod group "Mebel Plyus" (Furniture Plus) and sold furniture for offices, hotels, boarding houses, cafes, bars, and restaurants[9]. The store was built to the standards of the late 2000s in a thorough way: an online catalog of office furniture by section (executive offices and chairs, reception desks, conference chairs, computer desks, safes and metal cabinets, upholstered furniture), a separate catalog of tables and chairs for bars and restaurants, a shopping cart showing item quantity and order total, a discount coupon, a price list, a service center, custom-size furniture manufacturing, credit and factoring, and an online consultant button. There was also a job posting for a sales department manager, with work in the Avtozavodsky and Nizhegorodsky districts[9].

Thus the sector community of Nizhny Novgorod textile and garment makers did not survive past the mid-2000s: the address passed to furniture retail. In our set of archival snapshots there is not a single one showing the community's showcase itself, so its content is known today only from the lines of the nn.ru directory. The last home-page snapshot captured in our sample is dated June 22, 2008[9].
