The House of Scientists is a cultural and educational institution in Nizhny Novgorod that brings together clubs and interest groups for specialists with higher education, primarily representatives of the city's academic community. It serves as a venue for creative activities, civic life, and professional development for scientists and academics.

The House of Scientists building at 25 Oktyabrskaya Street, constructed in the late nineteenth century to house the artisans' council, was transferred in the 1920s to the House of Scientific and Technical Workers, and in 1937 was reorganized as the House of Scientists. Houses of Scientists, as a form of association for employees of scientific institutions and higher education, appeared in the USSR from the 1920s onward — the first was opened in Petrograd; the Soviet government allocated architectural landmarks for their use, and a total of 36 such institutions operated across the country.[3] The building holds the status of a cultural heritage site.[1]

Activities

A number of permanent associations operate under the House of Scientists. The Russkiye Uzory ("Russian Patterns") Club, founded in 1991 under the direction of embroidery master Dina Ivanovna Ivanova, was awarded the title of "People's Collective" in 2002; under its auspices, more than 100 people have been trained in traditional nineteenth-century embroidery techniques and examples of monastic embroidery. Since 2000, architect and decorative arts master Tatyana Aleksandrovna Vasilyeva has been an active participant in the Russkiye Uzory Club.[2] Earlier, from 1971 to 1974, the EVOS Club of Aesthetic Education for Youth operated at the House of Scientists, with Vasilyeva herself serving as its chairperson.[2]

As part of its activities, the institution publishes the scholarly journal Poisk NN, and also collaborates with Rospatent to assist with the patenting of intellectual property and the registration of trademarks.[2]

The building houses a hall with 70 seats, a Grand Hall with 200 seats, the Yantarnaya Komnata ("Amber Room") hall with 15 seats, four lecture rooms accommodating 10–35 people, a conference room and a presentation room, as well as an exhibition hall in the foyer of the Grand Hall.[2]

Leadership and Public Role

The Chairman of the Council of the Nizhny Novgorod House of Scientists is Nikolay Fyodorovich Yershov, who simultaneously holds the post of president of the Znanie Society of Nizhny Novgorod Region and is a board member of the Znanie Society of Russia. The House of Scientists is among the organizations with which professional associations are affiliated; in particular, it cooperates with the union of decorative arts masters "Gallery of Crafts".[2]

From 1976 to 2007, the Nizhny Novgorod House of Scientists was headed by Tamara Fyodorovna Skudnova, an Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation.[2] In 1999, the Ministry of Education and Science of Nizhny Novgorod Region established the Nizhny Novgorod Scientific Information Center (NNIC) — House of Scientists; from 1999 to 2011 the NNIC was led by Ilya Alekseyevich Korshunov.[2]

In 2026, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Nizhny Novgorod Region initiated a structural reorganization of the institution: the House of Scientists was granted the status of a state budgetary institution of additional professional education under the name "Nizhny Novgorod House of Scientists" and is to become a platform for communication between universities and research teams and for holding strategic planning sessions. The duties of director of the reorganized institution are being carried out by Galina Remizova.[1]
