In Soviet times, the city of The City of Gorky had a tobacco factory that produced, among other things, "Priboy" cigarettes.
And there was a song:
"Fine are the Havana cigars. Even finer — Gorky's "Priboy." Smoke half a pack and you'll drop on all fours. Life takes on a whole new hue straightaway."
The factory was located in the area of Rozhdestvenskaya.
After the end of the Great Patriotic War, in order to boost the economy of the Baltic republics, it was relocated to the city of Kaunas, where it continues to operate to this day, producing "Kęstutis" cigarettes.
Business Development in a Market Economy
In the early 2000s, a certain Russian-Armenian joint venture called "GrandTabak" was planning to build a cigarette manufacturing plant in Nizhny Novgorod. The factory in Nizhny Novgorod was established with the involvement of Ivan Savvidi and associates.
It was located where the "Otkryty Materik" furniture showroom now stands. Equipment was brought in and even a first batch of cigarettes was produced — "Strelka," "Strelka Lyuks," and "Amo." Then the owner shut the factory down and sold the building to "Slavyansky Dvor."
The business proved unprofitable — the cheapest cigarettes stopped generating income.
After closing production in Nizhny Novgorod, tobacco manufacturing was continued at JSC "Donskoy Tabak."
