The GAZ-42 is a GAZ-brand vehicle running on wood fuel.
Nature of the phenomenon
A gasifier-powered modification of the GAZ-MM, running on wooden billets (firewood). Engine output: 35–38 hp; rated payload: 1.0 t (actual payload was lower, since a substantial portion of the shortened flatbed was occupied by a 150–200 kg reserve of billets). Years of production: 1938–1949.
Gasifier unit
The GAZ-42 gasifier vehicle is fitted with a gasifier unit employing a downdraft gasification process, with a cylindrical bunker 400 mm in diameter and 1,000 mm in height, volume 0.25 m³, air supply through 10 tuyères 8 mm in diameter, and a high-intensity combustion chamber. The gasifier is mounted on the left side of the vehicle. The cooler — an inertial type consisting of two sections with perforated plates — is positioned along the vehicle frame beneath the flatbed. A vertical-type cleaner fitted with Raschig rings (25,000 pieces — 65 kg) is mounted on the right side of the vehicle. The mixer is a vertical ejection (vortex) type. The gasifier is ignited by means of a suction electric fan. Cold-start time for the gasifier: 5–10 minutes. Total weight of the unit: 400 kg. All types of solid fuel may be used to produce generator gas, for example: wood, charcoal, peat, hard coal, brown coal, anthracite, briquettes made from various fuel waste, etc.
