Angob was widely used in ancient decorative art; in Russian pottery it is known as "pobela" (whitewash slip).
It conceals the colour or coarse texture of the underlying material in order to improve its appearance.
Applications
It is used in the manufacture of coloured brick and double-layer facade cladding products. Angob is typically applied (a process known as angobing) by spraying or pouring onto freshly formed, dried, or fired ware, followed by firing.
It may be covered with a layer of transparent glaze (a glassy coating), painted decoration, and so on.
Angobing is a type of coating used to decorate Ceramics, distinguished by its opacity and lack of gloss; its raw materials contain a significant proportion of clay substance, and it does not form a glassy layer.
