Dmitriev, Maxim Petrovich (1858 – 1948) — Russian photographer of the 19th–20th centuries, founder of the genre of editorial photojournalism. The history of Russian social photography begins with this author's name. He was born on 21 August 1858 in the village of Povalishino, Kirsanov Uyezd, Tambov Governorate.
In 1877 he moved to Nizhny Novgorod and found work at the studio of photographer Karelin. Over ten years he mastered every aspect of the photographer's craft, and in 1887 he opened his own studio in Nizhny Novgorod.
Dmitriev was a gifted portrait photographer and documentary photographer. Over the course of several years he traveled to all the Volga cities, photographing Volga landscapes, urban views, and scenes of everyday life.
His work received high awards at exhibitions in Paris, Amsterdam, Chicago, and New York. The Russian Museum of Photography has been opened in the former premises of Dmitriev's studio.
