columb2002.narod.ru was the site of the country club hotel "Columb," hosted on the free "Narod.ru" hosting service and known from archived snapshots taken between June 2003 and November 2004[1][3]. The site's connection to Nizhny Novgorod is a catalog connection only: it entered the census from an archived snapshot of the nn.ru catalog, where "Columb" was described as a hotel on the bank of the Volga near the town of Bor — complete with photographs, a menu, and booking (see the Archival study of the Nizhny Novgorod internet from the counter.nn.ru rating). The home page itself preserved neither a postal address nor a phone number[1][2].

What the home page looked like

The home page was arranged as a short entry point into sections. Under the establishment's name were five menu items: "accommodation," "dining," "entertainment and sport," "location," "prices and booking"[1]. The snapshot text interleaves these items with six short descriptors: "modern," "comfortable," "compact," "situated in a picturesque area," "suitable for family holidays," "guarded" — that is how they stood on the page, typos included[1]. There was no connected narrative text about the establishment on the home page: the entire account of "Columb" fit into these few words next to the links.

In the preserved text, the name appears twice in a row — "Country club hotel 'COLUMB'," with the hotel's name in capital letters inside single quotes[1]. The page ended with two phrases: "Feel like an explorer" — the home page's play on the hotel's name, addressed to the visitor — and "Follow our news"[1].

The snapshot from January 26, 2004 repeats the June 2003 snapshot word for word: over seven months, nothing on the home page had changed[1][2]. The promise to follow the news remained just that — a promise: no news feed appears in any of the surviving snapshots[1][2].

What the site offered

From the set of sections and descriptors, one can see how "Columb" presented itself: a small, guarded country hotel for family holidays, with dining, entertainment and sport, and booking through the site[1]. The catalog entry adds photographs and a menu to this — meaning the site held things the home page alone did not show.

Our archival snapshot did not capture a single inner page: it preserved only snapshots of the address itself, that is, the home page[1][2]. So neither prices, nor the number of rooms, nor the exact location on the Volga bank can be reconstructed from these materials — of the commercial offer, only its skeleton remains. The digits in the address itself — columb2002 — are likewise unexplained by the snapshots: what the "2002" meant does not follow from the archive.

Place in the Nizhny Novgorod internet

Traces of visibility for "Columb" are nearly nonexistent: neither a rating nor votes for it were recorded in the census, and it does not appear in the surviving samples of the Counter.nn.ru counter. The site's only confirmed presence in the Nizhny Novgorod Internet is the entry in the nn.ru catalog, through which it entered this census.

Judging by the archive, "Columb" never acquired its own domain: over the year and a half the address is visible in the web archive, the site remained a subdomain of the free "Narod.ru," no new address was ever recorded for it, and its home page did not change[1][2].

How it closed

Between January and November 2004, the site disappeared. At the same address, on November 17, 2004, the web archive captured not the home page but a service page from the host: "403. No such page," with the explanation that the page "used to be here, but for some reason isn't here now," and the consolation "That's just how the stars aligned." [3] At the bottom was the signature "Copyright © 2004 'Yandex'" and an offer to set up your own site — the page now belonged to the host, not to "Columb"[3].

With this snapshot, the address's history breaks off: the last snapshot in the web archive is dated November 17, 2004[3]. What became of the country club hotel itself on the Volga — whether it moved to another address, changed its name, or closed along with its site — is unknown from the surviving materials. In total, the site lived in the web archive for about a year and a half: as a hotel showcase from June 21, 2003 to January 26, 2004, and as an empty placeholder until November 17, 2004[1][2][3].
