The Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) is a Russian left-wing political party founded in 1993 as the successor to the CPSU. It has a regional branch in the Nizhny Novgorod Region; a number of Nizhny Novgorod public and academic figures are among its members.[3]

Party Members in the Nizhny Novgorod Region

Among the notable Nizhny Novgorod residents who are members of the CPRF is Viktor Ivanovich Zhmachinsky, a full member of the Russian Academy of Transport and a specialist in economics and enterprise management.[3] Vyacheslav Leonidovich Zyuzin, Doctor of Technical Sciences and recipient of the medals "300 Years of the Russian Navy" and "Veteran of Labour," is also a party member. Viktor Alexandrovich Plekhanov, who at various times headed the Perevoz oil depot, the Dzerzhinsky state farm, and the Perevoz flax-spinning factory, and who was awarded the medal "For the Transformation of the Non-Black Earth Zone," is likewise a member of the CPRF.

The Nizhny Novgorod Regional Committee and Political Activity

The Nizhny Novgorod regional branch of the CPRF is led by the party's regional committee (obkom). In December 2011, the first secretary of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Committee attempted to enter a polling station during the State Duma elections together with CPRF deputies of the Legislative Assembly; the administration of Kanavino District blocked their entry onto the premises of the electoral commission. CPRF deputy from the Nizhny Novgorod branch Vladislav Yegorov has put forward legislative initiatives on numerous occasions, including on the indexation of social benefits, utility tariffs, and internet blocking.[2] The Nizhny Novgorod regional branch of the CPRF officially nominated candidates for elections to the State Duma of the ninth convocation and to the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.[2]

Property Associated with the Party's Predecessor

Some of the Nizhny Novgorod property that had belonged to the CPSU during the Soviet era was repurposed after the party's dissolution. In particular, the former CPSU district committee building on Minin Square was transferred to the Nizhny Novgorod Boys' Choral Chapel; deputy Alexander Serikov played a significant role in this, reportedly having "fought for" the building on the chapel's behalf. In the elections to the Nizhny Novgorod City Duma (according to data published in September 2025), the CPRF secured five seats — one more than in the previous convocation — and the faction's share in the Duma rose from 11.4% to 12.8%.[1]

The CPRF faction in the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod Region has 5 deputies; its leader is Vladislav Ivanovich Yegorov and its deputy leader is Oleg Sergeyevich Kiritsa. The faction also includes deputies Lyudmila Nikolayevna Burkova, Evgeniy Ivanovich Zudilin, and Roman Vladimirovich Kabeshev.
