Vidyayev Boris Pavlovich (1934–2016) was the director of the Gorky Automobile Plant from 1986 to 1996, one of the key figures in the Soviet and Russian automotive industry during the perestroika era and the 1990s. He led GAZ through the collapse of the Soviet economy and steered the enterprise through one of the most severe crises in its history.[1]

Career at the Plant

Vidyayev's working life was inseparable from the Gorky Automobile Plant: in 1953 he joined it as a foundry moulder. He was born in 1935 in the selo of Staraya Berezovka in Sergach District, into a peasant family. In 1951 he completed seven years of schooling and enrolled at Trade School No. 1 in Gorky, and in 1965 he graduated from the Automobile and Tractor Faculty of the Gorky Polytechnic Institute named after A. A. Zhdanov (evening division).[2] Over the following decades he worked his way up from the shop floor to the highest levels of plant management. From 1986 Boris Pavlovich led GAZ for ten years. According to local history sources, he served as General Director of GAZ JSC from 1986 to 1994, not until 1996 as stated in some publications; over 43 years at the plant he rose to the post of General Director and Vice President of GAZ JSC.[2] This period coincided with sweeping economic changes, the collapse of the socialist system, and a chronic shortage of goods.[1]

Principal Achievements

Among the most significant results of his directorship were keeping the plant alive through the turbulent 1990s and bringing the GAZelle to market — a vehicle that became the workhorse of the Russian economy and retains that role to this day. During the years of acute shortages, Vidyayev managed to ensure that the plant's workforce did not find itself without a livelihood. Contemporaries and colleagues described him as a man of professional foresight, deep knowledge of automotive engineering, exceptional diligence, and high standards.[1]

After the Directorship

After retiring, Boris Pavlovich did not distance himself from GAZ: he continued to take part in the plant's affairs, shared his experience, and shared in the collective's hardships and successes alike. His authority was recognized by workers, managers, experts, and politicians, and his work was acknowledged with high state decorations. These included the Medal "For Distinguished Labour," the Orders of the Red Banner of Labour and the Badge of Honour, and a Bronze Medal of the VDNKh; in 1995 he was awarded the title "Honoured Worker of the Automobile Plant," and in 1999 "Honoured Worker of Industry of the USSR." In 2004, for the comprehensive development and industrial introduction into mass production of the unified family of multi-purpose light commercial GAZelle vehicles, Vidyayev was awarded the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology. In 2005, for his outstanding personal contribution to the development of industry and the social sphere, he was conferred the title "Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast."[2][2][2][1] Boris Pavlovich Vidyayev passed away in April 2016.
