baltika.r52.ru was the website of the Nizhny Novgorod sales division of the St. Petersburg brewing company "Baltika," operating in the Nizhny Novgorod domain zone r52.ru. As the home page stated, "in the Nizhny Novgorod region the products of the company 'Baltika' are offered by its official representative, a sales division that has existed on the market since 1998"[1]; deliveries within the city were made from warehouses at 43 Fedoseyenko Street — premises of OAO "Proviant"[1]. Web archive snapshots span 2001–2003[1][4].

What the site looked like

Navigation consisted of five items: "News," "About the Company," "Our Products," "Order Desk," "How to Find Us"[1]. The menu was duplicated twice — as a text line and as graphical buttons — with fragments of commented-out code left in the markup between them[1]. The home page was one long continuous block of text: it opened with a discourse on beer as "one of the most ancient beverages," with references to medieval medicine and the Domostroy, followed by a section about the company itself and a "Secrets of Success" section[1]. At the bottom stood the copyright notice "© 2000 Baltika Brewing Company" and the developer's credit — "Web design by Teamoty Brane Inc."[1].

Over two and a half years the text of the home page did not change by a single word: the snapshots from 2001, 2002, and 2003 match verbatim, including the 2000 copyright notice[2][3][4]. The "News" section listed in the menu was never reflected on the home page. Only the home page survives in the web archive, so the phone number and directions that stood behind the "How to Find Us" item cannot be recovered.

What the Nizhny Novgorod division offered

The site was aimed at wholesale buyers, not retail. According to the home page, the warehouse constantly held a "full product range" of the company — the brands "Baltika," "Tula," "Don," as well as mineral water and lemonade; deliveries arrived daily, and the company's own fleet of trucks handled delivery within the city[1]. Regular customers were offered a five-banking-day payment deferral, and working directly with the manufacturer's representative was presented as a chance to buy goods "at the factory's ex-works price"[1].

As partners the page listed Nizhny Novgorod wholesalers: the trading houses "Leopard," "Medved," "Tessa," and the firm "Baltika NN"[1]. According to the site, the division's sales volumes had grown tenfold since 1998[1].

The account of the company

More than half the text was devoted to background on the parent company. As the home page stated, "Baltika" was founded in 1990, in 1998 it brewed 492 million liters of beer — about 15% of all beer produced in Russia — and between 1991 and 1998 it had increased output eighteenfold[1]. The company owned plants in St. Petersburg and Rostov-on-Don, a trading company in Moscow, and 14 trade representative offices in major cities; its products were supplied to more than 140 cities in Russia, and from 1999 it had gone into export[1]. Also mentioned were the Government of the Russian Federation Prize for Quality (1997) and the title "People's Brand of the Year" (1998)[1].

The "Secrets of Success" section listed five points — water from a multi-stage purification plant, computer-controlled production, the absence of preservatives in any of the varieties, with reference to a certificate from the International Green Cross, imported malt and natural granulated German hops without extracts, and thirty-second pasteurization[1]. All these claims are the site's own promotional text and are given here as a characterization of the source.

Place in the Nizhny Novgorod internet and closure

The site belonged to that layer of the Nizhny Novgorod Internet made up of corporate "business-card" pages of local representative offices of federal brands: a third-level domain in the r52.ru zone, a static page unchanged for years. It entered the Archival study of the Nizhny Novgorod internet from the counter.nn.ru rating not through the ranking but via the nn.ru directory listing, where it appeared with the description "Products of the company 'Baltika' from the official representative": it had no measurable indicators in Counter.nn.ru and no votes at the Nizhny Novgorod Internet Day.

The last snapshot in the web archive is dated November 22, 2003, and its content is identical to the first, taken on May 20, 2001[4][1]. As of our check, the domain baltika.r52.ru no longer exists; where the Nizhny Novgorod division moved to, and whether it moved online at all, cannot be established from the available material.
