A federal-significance architectural monument is a structure under special state protection. The status is established by a Decree of the President of the Russian Federation.

Criticism

« In the city of Town of Vyksa, a federal-significance architectural monument has been destroyed — the office building of the A. I. Batashev estate-and-industrial complex, constructed in 1786.

The Batashev office building, a Baroque architectural monument, was to have been restored in time for the 250th anniversary of the Vyksa Metallurgical Plant. The work was carried out by Gama-Stroy LLC, which holds a state licence for scientific restoration work.

However, on a Friday, the supervising restoration architect discovered that the structure had been destroyed and that an excavation pit had been dug in its place.

No comments on the incident could be obtained today from Rosokhrankultura or from the State Heritage Protection Department of Nizhny Novgorod Region. Meanwhile, as early as 27 March, Alexey Davydov, a member of the Council of the Nizhny Novgorod Society for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments, had formally notified Dmitry Musin, head of the Rosokhrankultura Office for the Volga Federal District, and Vitaly Kolesnikov, head of the State Heritage Protection Department of Nizhny Novgorod Region, in writing that the unlawful demolition of the monument had begun.

The representatives of these government bodies took no effective measures to save the structure, and the result was the irreplaceable loss of yet another gem of Nizhny Novgorod architecture.
